You Are (Not) Reading This

Michail
I'll start off by saying "I'll start off by saying" and then move onto the fact that I'm staying up past my bedtime to post this.  Yes, I have the second-most-lame bedtime known to man.  First spot is reserved for Mike.  Thanks for making look less lame Mike!

So "Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone" premiered in North America with an English dub track (theoretically) a few hours ago.  In a very odd (and nice) twist of events, Canada had more participating theaters than the USA did.  Of course, they showed "Eureka 7: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers" while Canada missed out (to my knowledge).  A few friends from the Junk Guild tried to organize a meetup to see the movie, but nothing got off the ground.  Instead I took the train home like normal but got off at Metrotown station and went inside the mall to grab a ticket at the theater.

The movie was either going to be very busy or absolutely dead.  Since I now reside in B.C., the answer was the former.  The first thing I heard walking in to theater four was "so she says 'I need to use your deck' and all he can answer with is 'please be gentle'".  Bad enough I grinned at the line, but worse was I immediately recognized it with no hesitation.  Macross Frontier is just that awesome.  Then as I took my seat, there were a group of friends a few rows down attempting to find matches for the Eva characters in the Spider-Man universe.  Holy WTF?  And I thought I was bad.

My seat neighbour and I chatted about a few things as the time ticked away, and he seemed quite normal.  A few seats to my left was a completely different story.  And that requires a bit more of the story first.
So Eva 1.0 is presented in Blu-Ray (Wave of the Future!), and it looked awesome.  But it took the staff/crew FOUR times to get the main audio track to be heard properly.  And with the way the movie starts, no one knew it wasn't working until about 90 seconds in.  Watching the same 90 seconds over and over and over and over again gets annoying when I'm not doing it on purpose.
The first time it happened, a poor staff member had to come in and announce they were having (obvious) audio issues and that it would be corrected in a few minutes.  My seat neighbour to the left perks and and asks "while they're at it, can you turn up the volume?".
Srsly?
The audio was the damn issue ...

They paused the video the second time on Shinji holding his arms in front of his head to shield himself from an exploding airship.  "I musn't run away, I musn't run away, I musn't run away ..." was the line someone quoted.
I mentioned they should have at least paused it on Misato instead of Shinji.

Audio issues aside, it's a good movie.  It's been almost six years (that I remember) since I'd seen the series, but from what I remember, there's about 30% less of Shinji being a whining idiot, but also less school.  I could be remembering it incorrectly.  Besides, once "Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance" comes out, the whole plot from the series goes to hell.  Eva Unit 02 is there as normal, Unit 03 goes berserk like normal, Unit 04 ceases to exist (wait, who?), Unit 05 drops in from the moon (Unit what?) and test Unit 06 is brought up (from where?  Huh?  WTF?)

Like I said, it all goes to hell.  In a good way.  There are angels involved after all.

To top it all off , I don't even know the name of the pilot for Unit 06.

See You Next Time (Space Cowboy)

P.S. You say the whole "(Not)" thing in the title.  So really, the parenthesis aren't really needed.  But then where would the fun be?  It's all Shinji's choice.  Is he alone?  Can he go forward?
Hmm .... glad I actually just thought of that, it makes some sense (in an odd Anno Hideaki way)

Warning: err ... explicit thinking ahead?

Not only is it a great techno remix, but it's also a great way to recap all the important things from the previous Podtoid!

Which brings me to my first thingy of the update post thingy:
I enjoy podcasts, but I've noticed a trend among my feeds.  I've met one or more member of the podcast crew of almost every podcast I subscribe to.
Gundamn! @ MAHQ.net (Neo, SoulBro and Chris)
Flip The Script (Neo and SoulBro)
Podtoid (Anthony Burch)
LRRCast (Graham, Paul, Jer, Matt, Bill, Tim, Kathleen, Brad)
Drunk Tank by RoosterTeeth (Joel, Gus)
the others that I haven't met:
Anime Addicts Anonymous
Level Nine
R5 Central

Since I've now caught up on a rather large backlog of Podtoid podcasts, I am forced to wait for the weekly (sometimes longer) updates from the various podcasts.  I need new ones to subscribe to.  Feel free to suggest any you think I may enjoy.

Break.  (Next week on Podtoid: Butts, butts, butts!)

And now onto our next segement

....

Damnit,  I can't remember what I was going to talk about ...

So ... anyone watch Doomsday Arcade?

Oh!  I remember now.  Anime!  Geez, how forgetful of me.

This year I've only been keeping up with Basquash and FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as they air.  FMA:B was an obvious choice for me, essentially a half-reimagined series with more manga plot-elements thrown in.  Remind me to pick up the manga and start reading it.

Basquash was a less obvious choice as it combimes super-robot styled mecha action with ... basketball.  It wasn't until Yaz told me the Voice Actors of Alto Saotome and Sheryl Nome (both from Macross Frontier) would be in it that I started getting really interested.  And it's been a hell of series so far.  Hot-blooded super-robot mech action is good with anything it seems.

Finally I decided to watch the short series of K-On.  Normally I don't watch Slice of Life styled anime since I tend to prefer action-oriented stuff, but I make exceptions for anything that has a band with music.  Following in the footsteps that Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad left in my heart, K-On (which is a play on "Light Music Group" in Japanese) is about five highschool girls who are a part of the Light Music Group Club.  It's a short 12-episode series but it has great music.

And now I must rest.  ODST comes out next week and I've only just realized that I've pre-ordered a game that arrives in November.  I need to stop doing that.

Fnar fnar ...

Um ... yeah.

I am now recovered enough from training, sparring and fighting to post this:

Just a quick preview.
Michail
Forestory!  Because there's not much 'back' to this story.

Saturdays aren't the busiest day for the Bushido(TM) Martial Arts & Fight Gear Supply retail store, but once every few-to-several weeks it means UFC night.  Well, this particular Saturday is the first once post-UFC 102: Declaration, and it really wasn't shaping up to be a memorable Saturday.  The highlight of the morning was showing Jon the fight between Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin (Silva won by KO [Punch] at 3:23 of Round 1).

The fight sparked a conversation about fighting and technique and styles (as most things do when it comes to Bushido staff), and our similar desires to expand our fighting horizons.  20 minutes and a few sales later Jon emerges from the back announcing to me that he had about a dozen people lined up for some amateur fights.  Now Jon himself trains in Boxing, Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu out of Revolution, but over half of his friends have no prior fight training.

Technically neither do I.  I've sparred against multiple styles, but the biggest eye-opener I've ever had was taking on Leo who teaches Jeet Kun Do and Muay Thai.  Whoever I face next weekend will be getting a body full of legs and some fists to mix it up, since I'll be more than likely falling back on my height, balance and kicks to keep them at bay.
Unless we start ground fighting, then I may fare better.  May.

I now have a week to whip myself into the best shape I possibly can.  The regiement wll include training with a friend or three to re-open my eyes, muscle exercises for lost strength and stretching to regain lost flexibility.
Fortunately enough most of my gear will suffice, and if it doesn't, well I get a mad discount at work and access to a crap-load of product (some of which is not yet available to the public market).

In no way are these fights ranked, instead they'll serve as a basis to find out where we stand.  Or at the very least, where I stand.

I mention all of this because the EdmoWriMo Chat Reunion is Sunday at 7PM MST (UST-7).  B.C. (or the Greater Vancouver Area in general) seems bound and determined to completely segregate me from my former home.

So let it be said that I enjoy competition.

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

[info]totchipanda  gave me "F"/

... in no particular order.

1. Faint - Linkin Park (Meteora)
A staple from LP's third album, I personally believe this song was as widely received as Numb was.  It may be a little short, but it's reminiscent of Hybrid Theory.  To me, anyways.

2. Fake It - Seether (Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces)
I haven't met a poor song by Seether yet, and Fake It is no exception.  Even better is hearing this song performed live.  Go see Seether in concert if you possibly can.

3. Friends - Stephanie (Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 ED2)
This song trumps first ED from Gundam 00 (Wana - Back Horn) hand over fist.  I'm a little sad that the rest of her songs aren't this wonderfully awesome.

4. Forces - Susumu Hirasawa (Berserk)
I don't know anything about Hirasawa-san who composed/performed this OP for Kentaro Miura's Berserk.

5. Flip The Script
Alright, I'm cheating a bit with this one, FTS is actuall a podcast run by a group of Florida-based podcasters: BoiWondr, Dr. Encyclopedia Black, Neo the Blond Ace, Soul Bro Ryu, Shoji Ramuro and Lee Majors.

So there we have it!  The letter "F" was more difficult than I thought it would be!

For those of you who haven't browsed my latest Facebook photo album, I attended the 2009 Narcoleptic Dyslexic Concussion Convention.
Better known as Anime Evolution.

I did the following things at AE '09:
-Took lots of pictures
-Met, chatted and interviewed the LoadingReadyRun crew
-Gained a concussion
-Broke a nose (not mine ...)
-Ran up and down hills and immobile escalators (which create a horrible optical illusion while concussed)

Despite that I finally have the LRR Interview edited and uploaded onto the net!

I'd better do this now before I forget.

For the record, I told as few people as possible about my move.  I'm not sure why, but it felt like something I needed to keep quiet about.  Only my bosses (because I was leaving and because they tried their hardest to get me a job in another province), my Aunt and Uncle (because I was going to stay with them until I found a place), my parents (do I need to explain this one?), my cousin Lexy (since I was going to stop by and see her little boy), my Martial Arts instructors (filling out a program withdrawal form would beg the question) and five assorted people knew.

Secrets seem like they're hard to keep nowadays, even with the best intentions they seep out.  Especially in a workplace like my former one.  By the time I left, at least half the store knew.  Most of the staff wished me the best of luck, but there were a few that had other intentions.

After all of this, I still haven't told everyone, as evidenced here.  The more people I tell, the more normal it seems that I am now living in a province where I have very little in the way of a safety net.  Time for me to man up in the world I suppose, and I'll be damned if this breaks me.  I'll make this province my own little playground, to make it a wonderful adventure!

If I seem a little more aggressive it's because I'm not training right now.  Exerting myself three or four days a week released a lot of energy, and now it's just sitting there, slowly building up.  My past experience with this means my body will pay for it once it explodes out of me.  Whatever I choose to do at that moment will take a hefty toll.

I mentioned school last time.  I think.  Wait, let me check. Yes I did.  School.  Post secondary at Douglas College in New Westminster.  A friend of mine recommended it to me, stating they had some really good professors/teachers there.  At this point in time I have two courses in mind: Japanese and Mandarin.
Now, yes, Edmonton offers Asian languages, but you generally have to take them with a Pacific Asia Management course (a.k.a. Business I think).  Not that I don't like Business, but I want to concentrate solely on the language, one linguistic step at a time.  I utilized my below-basic Japanese skills for NaNo last year, integrating simple phrases into the story where it fit.  One year I hope to be able to integrate more, or even write the entire thing in another language.

I would one day like to know Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and maybe one of the Thai languages.  It'd certainly help with karaoke.

And now, one day  week, Stuart and I devote ourselves to making a podcast show we've dubbed "2G Radio".  We've made two episodes so far, dealing with nerdtastic news in World News, Games, Movies and Sports, and good rock'n'roll music in between.  We're on iTunes, searcheable under "2G Radio", or you can head over toe 2GRadio.Blogspot.com or our host site 2GRadioShow.Mevio.com (formerly Podshow.com).

And now I must be off, there are legal documents that sadly require my attention.

What's dustier, a desert or this journal?

So it would seem that I have not posted here since near the end of March.  I beg forgiveness, but my plate filled up.  I was supposed to post In Motion Episode 5 but it was promptly forgotten in the shuffle of things.  For those playing the home game, we'll rewind a bit and travel back to the beginning of March.

I flew down to B.C. during the second week of March to begin my search for places to live as well as put the word out to a few stores.  The search was sadly fruitless, between the fact that I didn't have a job in the province or even a bank that existed outside my own.  However, creating a good impression on a landlord/landlady normally DOESN'T involve playing an episode of "Flip The Script" on an iPod loud enough to be heard when the earphones weren't in my ears.  Instead, it goes like this:
LL: "So, you have no job."
Me: "No, I'm employed, but I'm still living in Alberta."
LL: "What is this bank?"
iPod: "Go For Broke!"
Me: *cursing SBR for his damn ads* "ATB is an Alberta-only bank."
iPod: "Okay!  Hey you!"
LL: "Do you have bank records I can see?"
iPod: "Show me your moves!"
Me: "What?  No, they're at home.  In Alberta."
LL: "Then mail them down.  Or do online."
Me: "I don't have online banking and it would take too long to mail them.  I'm only down here for a week to look for places.  I'm moving at the end of March.  I have funds for a security deposit or first month's rent with me."
LL: "Okay, well I'll fax application off.  You know the way out?"
iPod: "Vanquish your foe!"
Me: "Uh, yeah."

To clarify, no, English was not her first language.  And she had issues trying to grasp that ATB doesn't exist outside of Alberta.  Then again, I didn't really try to hard to impress her.  Something about her didn't click with me.  I returned after the week to Alberta with no good news.  However, some good news awaited me at work, a former manager of mine was going to pull some strings to get me into a store down there so at least I'd have something.

The rest of the month passed a little too quickly, I had a great last two-hour class at TKD and went out for parting drinks afterwards with the whole gang.  With near everything packed, I settled in for the 12-hour journey to B.C., which I would solo for the first time.  I've made the drive many times during my life, and I've marathoned it in nine hours once, but I've always had someone else in the car with me.

I made it down safe and sound to my Aunt and Uncle's place in former Aldergrove before resuming the hunt.  During that second hunt, I found out my transfer didn't take effect, so not only was searching for a place to live, but a job as well.  Fortunately, I found a decent place with a decent landlord soon a few days after arriving, and the timing couldn't have been better.  I was ready to move in as my parents arrived with the rest of my stuff.  No need for extra loading/unloading, I simply guided them to my new place and we unloaded there.  A job well done.

Now all I needed was a job.

I applied MANY places, most of them online which was mostly a good thing.  I was running on borrowed printers and paper for my resumes, so I had to be a bit stingy with them.  My internet connection was activated on April 14th and with that at my disposal, my search increased in ferocity.  As a mix between last-ditch attempt and a joke, I applied at a Martial Arts supply store in Surrey.  I didn't expect much since I had more experience behind the scenes than with retail sales, but then I received an e-mail back that sparked my hope.  Over the course of several days and many e-mails, we reached an interview.

Turns out they weren't looking for some part-time chum, they wanted a permanent full-time employee to add to their roster to help at both locations.  I hit the jackpot, except for one minor detail.  The hours possibly interfered with my original reason for moving: school.  I moved to B.C. (um, I guess that was my big reveal in case you missed it) for Post Secondary reasons since Alberta did not have the courses I wished to take.  Well, said courses are day-time only, no part-time or night-time classes.

Bushido (that supply store) didn't want to hire someone on full-time, train them up only to have them step down to part time after four to eight months.  That was understandable, I knew where they were coming from.  Six days later I received a call from them asking if I could start at their retail location right away.  Well, guess that meant I had settled the job issue for now.

I've work for Bushio for five working days now, and I enjoy the job.  I really don't look forward to having to leave, and let's face it, one day I will be starting a career and not just another job.

I'll update this again later with other news of what I've been doing.

We need to stop meeting like this ...

I didn't realize when I recorded the audio on Sunday that it amounted to 9 minutes of me talking.  I generally keep the audio at 5 minutes so I can have room to play around with the video.  So this week I split "In Motion" into two parts so I could have some room to experiment.  And experiment I did.

If you want to suggest ideas for an "In Motion" Video Cast, feel free to either comment here or e-mail them to InMotionVC@gmail.com

Being dehydrated sucks.  Especially when you're ground fighting.  Note to self:  Drink more water even when not doing anything.
I missed getting a black eye by virtue of not being the senior rank, and instead took an elbow to my face and cut my lip open.  Fair trade, makes for better first impressions with a new boss when you're recovering from a visible face wound.  However, the scar will be interesting to explain for the thousandth time.

I didn't realize until I started recording this week's audio that I forgot to post the last "In Motion" I did which aired February 28th.

I have the easiest part ready, but I'm going to experiment with the footage for this week's video.

After multiple attempts (some in part due to Bandai ...), I finally have a working version of "In Motion".  I need to upgrade my equipment (in this case a microphone that isn't half my age) and find a proper way to capture video from an Xbox 360 (which is definitely possible, the RoosterTeeth and Kotaku guys have done it along with MANY others).  More than that, it also gives me much needed practice with Sony Vegas Pro 8.0

And looking back at my last post I made here, I had inteded to get this up a week after January 8th.  It's February 9th.  Week ... month .... could be worse right?

Further Notice!

... I always wanted to say that.  Anyways, the whole "Hiatus" thing was my attempt at being LRR-funny and more than likely failing miserably since the punch line took longer than five seconds to deliver.  Comedic timing, it's all about the timing.

And now, onto the news!

Diverging from my normal start of anime, this time I'm going to announce the idea-in-creation-process of VVC (name possibly a WIP), and basically it's a video-cast where I talk about what I would here and a few other things.  The goal is to keep it under 10 minutes, hopefully around 5 or 6 minutes.  Most vloggers vlog in their room/in front of their computers or possibly from a couch.  And by most I mean pretty much all of them except when they're "on location" for some event or another.  I'm going to break the mold and keep mine mobile and I'm pretty sure I've solved the problem of how I'm going to mount my cameras.  That's right, plural.  So keep an eye out for that.

Back to our regularly scheduled program: Gundam 00 aired a New Year's special recap of Season 1.  And apparently there was something at the end that had a prediction for season 2.  I must have missed that, all I heard was Setsuna's VA going on about the events in season 1, mostly about Ali Al-Saarchez.  New episode Saturday at midnight here, Sunday at 4:30 in Japan.  I have my watch set.  Literally.

Gundamn! episode 26 aired, where they covered the first three episodes of 00 season 2, the Endless Waltz for Gundam Roundup and did a special report on how SoulBro picks his "men" in anime.  He always has someone whom he refers to as "my man INSERTNAMEHERE" in almost every series that has recently aired, and there is a general trend of him picking the underdog.  And I'll segway into what goes into my thought process.

A while back I "reveiwed" some anime series like Beck, Frontier, Geass, 00 Season 1 and possibly one or two others.  And for each of those I picked out three people labeled "my man", "my boy" and "my girl".  My process behind the selection is thus: to be "my man" is to be a mentor, someone who could teach me a lot if we lived in the same universe.  To be "my boy" means you have potential, you can teach me something and I can teach you something, and the relationship would be akin to brothers.  To be "my girl" means you'll probably be assertive, probably able to kick my ass, definitely cute with a personality that just makes me want more, and as always we'll be able to learn from one another.

Dub update: I can't remember having done this for a while, so here we go!
-Naruto 206
-Bleach 95
-Code Geass R1 6 (I think we've been stuck here for a few weeks)
-Devil May Cry Level 3 (which is the last 4 episodes of the series)
-Gundam 00 Season 1 14
-Ouran Host to begin dub process in 2009.  Date to be announced
-Naruto Shippuden movie 2 to be released in 2009.  Not actually sure if they meant the dub or the sub since I can't find it anywhere.

So that's if for now, I'll be back on Sunday or Monday after the 00 episode.

2006.

...

Wait ...

I mean 2008.

Some notable events of 2008 include:

-Meeting the Gundamn! crew at Yasumicon
-Story-time with Uncle Wes
-Finally getting my procrastinating ass on Xbox Live
-Left 4 Dead sessions
-Saying good-bye to Stuart over text message ... from Florida
-Park Tag sessions
-Brian's stag and wedding
-Having language barrier issues
-NaNo WriMo 2008
-Geass, Frontier and 00 roundups with Yaz

Alright so some of those aren't notable in a good way, but they come to mind.  And they're not in chronological order.  Tell you what, let's make this like an Awards night or something ...
